A Family Matter Each year, California’s child protective services agencies remove thousands of kids from their homes. The story of how some parents decided to fight back.

August 29, 2013 was Danyelle Branning’s day off. She worked as a nurse in a hospital intensive-care unit and was reading in bed at her home in Eastvale, California, a small city some 50 miles inland of Los Angeles. Around 3 p.m., she heard a knock on the door and opened it to find a policeman on the front step.
